What are the types of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)?
There are several types of AHAs:
-
Lactic acid , found in dairy products and fermented vegetables
-
Glycolic acid , derived from sugar cane
-
Malic acid , found in apples
-
Citric acid , found in citrus fruits
-
Tartaric acid , present in grapes
Lactic acid and glycolic acid are among the best known. But all AHAs work in similar ways.
What are the benefits of AHAs?
AHAs have several benefits for the skin, including:
1. Gentle exfoliation
AHAs can be a good alternative to other exfoliation methods, such as abrasive brushes, scrubs, or wipes. These mechanical methods can be harsh and cause irritation. On the other hand, gentle exfoliation with a lower concentration of AHAs is often better tolerated by dry or sensitive skin.
2. Improved skin texture
Acid exfoliants like AHAs help remove dead skin cells that cause rough or flaky skin without causing irritation. The result: skin appears softer and smoother, with fewer imperfections.
3. Reduction of visible signs of aging
Over time and with sun exposure, cell renewal slows down, accentuating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
AHAs remove the top layer of dead cells and reveal younger-looking skin. In the long term, they also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin—two proteins essential for skin firmness and elasticity, which naturally decrease with age. Regular use therefore makes skin smoother and firmer.
4. Reduction of hyperpigmentation, melasma and sun spots
Frequent use of AHA treatments or peels can reduce dark marks on the skin, such as:
-
Melasma
-
Age spots
-
Sun spots (called lentigines)
Dermatologists often use AHA peels for these issues because they work deeper than over-the-counter products.
Caution: On dark skin, AHAs may cause darker spots or changes in pigmentation. If in doubt, consult a dermatologist before use.
5. Reduction of acne
AHAs may help some people prevent breakouts by removing dead skin cells that can clog pores.
How to use AHAs in your beauty routine?
AHAs are present in many products and formulations:
-
Cleaners
-
Tonics
-
Serums
-
Moisturizing creams
Before choosing an exfoliation product or method, it's important to consider your skin type and other skincare products you already use.
